Resident Falls Victim To Scam

A resident of Knob Creek Road reported to authorities Wednesday that she had been defrauded through an internet scam.

The victim, age 23, reported to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department that she had been searching on the internet for a job, and had submitted several job applications.

On April 9, she said she received a check through Fed Ex. The check bore the name of Huntingdon National Bank of Columbus, Ohio and was in the amount of $4,740.00.

Once the check had been delivered to her, the victim said she received an email with instructions to deposit it into her bank account then use a portion of the money to pay various fees and costs. She was instructed to purchase a Money Gram at Walmart and send the funds to a specific place.

The victim said that she forwarded the funds as instructed. The next day she discovered that the deposit had been removed from her account. Altogether, the victim said she had been bilked out of $2,850.00.

The victim told deputies that since that time she had received a second check and email that could be used for investigative purposes.
